We call our Buggspray Insect Repellent for Biting Flies a "4-in-1 repellent" because it contains a mixture of three EPA-approved ingredients that repel a wide variety of insects, arachnids (2 body segments, 8 legs) and other arthropods (hard, jointed body).
1. 25.0% DEET or diethyltoluamide (technical name: N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide) - This is a GREAT repellent against most genera of mosquitoes (Aedes, Anopheles & Culex) and has fairly good performance against fleas (Centocephalides canis - dog flea, Centocephalides felis - cat flea) as well as ticks.
2. 5.0% MGK 264 Insecticide Synergist (N-Octyl bicycloheptene dicarboximide) - It repels members of the Order Acarina (ticks and mites), as for example: Trombicula irritans - Chiggers, Red bugs; Amblyomma americanum - Lone star tick; Leeches such as Macrobdells decora and species in the genus Hirudo (Korean). It also acts as a "synergist" making the other repellents work better, giving the whole formula a boost.
3. 2.5% MGK Repellent 326 (Di-n-propyl isocinchomeronate) - This is the unique ingredient and is an actual fly repellent. It will repel Musca spp. - Housefly, Bush fly, Face fly; Tabanus spp. - Horse fly, Noise fly; Chrysops spp. - Deer fly; Syrphyds spp. - Hover fly - Halictus; Calliphora spp. - Blue bottle fly; Stratiomyia spp. - Soldier fly; Diachlorus ferrugatus (Fabricius) - Yellow fly; Stomoxys calcitrans - Stable fly; as well as many others. Most good fly sprays for horses use this ingredient at 0.5% and it lasts for days. We provide it at 5 times that concentration which is the maximum allowed by the EPA.
So there you have it. Three repellents acting like four, all in one formula!
