Every year in May/June the buffalo gnats (turkey gnats, biting gnats or black flies) hatch and create a nuisance in many parts of the country. Some years, it is much worse and it makes being outdoors almost unbearable. There are over 250 species of black flies in North America, 33 of which cause discomfort for humans by biting, swarming about the head and entering orifices (nose, ears, mouth & eyes) or working their way into openings in clothing.
In 2008, it was really bad in central Illinois. Because heavy rains have caused high stream and river water levels, 2009 has proven to be even worse. As the Illinois river and its tributaries have become cleaner over the years, we believe this has most likely caused a resurgence of the species, Simulium johannseni, a pest that was abundant in the area around 1912. It could also be Cnephia pecuarum, a dreaded pest which causes problems in the Mississippi river valley from Iowa to Louisiana.
While some insect repellents with DEET will provide some relief when there are only a few gnats, an OUTBREAK of buffalo gnats requires our DEET-free Buggins Natural Insect Repellent.
