You maybe saw Consumer Reports
June 2006 report on insect repellents where they named OFF DEEP
WOODS For Sportsmen I the most effective. Well, that is in a lab
test not a field test (the real world). Note: while CR
does good things, they are not bug experts or entomologists -
the pictures they have in that article show MALE mosquitoes, identified
by fuzzy antennae, and they don't bite! Only the females bite
so they get the protein they need to lay eggs.
We've found that 100% DEET is
overkill for mosquitoes in most situations - you don't need it
for 12 or 13 hours. In concentrations over approximately 25%,
DEET does not work better, it just lasts longer (there's a deeper
puddle or film which takes longer to evaporate). If you're working
in the yard, hiking, sweating, etc., it will dissipate much faster
than in an air-conditioned lab and you'll end up reapplying anyway.
Plus it's greasy and has a rather undesirable odor.
For those reasons, we no longer
make the 100% because you can always re-apply if you're in the
jungle. For most situations when mosquitoes bite (a few fours
in the morning or evening), 25% is great.
Plain DEET also does not work
to repel biting flies which is why we have a new
formula for that. Plus, our vanilla
scented product smells great and works better on biting gnats!
